Frequently asked questions
Plain answers about saving, finding, asking, privacy and your account. Still stuck? Use Settings, Help & Feedback inside the app, or write to admin@recallit.co.
The idea
What is Recallit?
A private place to keep the things you find interesting: web pages, YouTube videos, your own notes, pictures and files. Recallit reads what you save, writes a short summary and tags, and then helps you find it again, connect it to other things you saved, and turn it into something useful.
What can I actually do with what I save?
- Find it again: search the Library by words, tags, type or date.
- Ask Remy about your library: ask a question in plain words. Remy answers only from what you saved and shows which cards it used.
- See the connections: Insights draws your saved things as a galaxy, grouped by theme, so you notice patterns you would have missed.
- Get ideas back: daily picks and a weekly digest bring older cards forward.
- Make something: write notes with checklists, pictures and sketches, gather cards on Shelves, and export everything to Obsidian or as a zip.
- Discover: a weekly reading list of fresh links you can save with one click.
Who is it for?
Anyone who saves more than they ever re-read: students, researchers, makers, curious people. It is invite-only while it is small.
Can I share a card or a shelf with someone?
Not yet. Everything you save stays private to your account. If you want to pass something on, you can copy a note's text or use Export.
Getting started
How do I save something?
Several ways: Add a URL in the app, Bulk add (up to 10 links or files at once), write a Note, or search Wikipedia from inside the app. A Chrome extension (coming to the Chrome Web Store) can also save the page you are on, including YouTube videos.
How do I get the Chrome extension?
It is optional, and it is on its way to the Chrome Web Store. Until the link is ready you can write to admin@recallit.co and you will be told as soon as it is. Once it is installed, sign in to it with your Recallit username and password.
I was given an invite code. What now?
On the home page choose I have an invite (or Create an account on the sign-in screen), type the code, pick a username, give an email address and a password of at least 10 characters. We email a 6-digit code to confirm the address. It works for 10 minutes. If it does not arrive within a minute, look in your Junk or Spam folder (Outlook and Hotmail often put new senders there).
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. Open the site in your phone's browser and use Add to Home Screen. Settings, Connected devices has the steps for iPhone, iPad and Android. It then opens like an app.
Does it work offline?
No. Recallit needs an internet connection. It keeps no offline copy of your library on your phone or computer, which is also part of keeping it private.
Saving and finding
Why does a card say "Summary pending"?
Each person has a monthly allowance for the AI that writes summaries and answers, and there is a daily limit on saves. When one is used up, your card is still saved with its title and text, and the summary is written automatically later. Nothing is lost.
Why did a YouTube video save without a transcript?
YouTube blocks many cloud servers from reading transcripts. When that happens Recallit summarises the text of the page instead, or, for some videos, asks a transcript service. A video that has no transcript at all can only be saved with its page text.
What is Discover?
A weekly reading list made from themes, with one link from each of several sources. You can save any link with one click. Some sites are behind paywalls and say so.
How does Ask Remy work, and why did Remy say "that isn't in your library"?
Remy looks through your saved cards (title, tags, summary, the start of a saved page's text, and picture descriptions if you turned those on), picks the closest ones, and answers only from them. It lists the cards it used. If nothing matches, it says so, shows the closest cards, and offers a Library search with your key words. You can also take the question to ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini: you see the exact text first, and nothing is sent unless you choose.
Why can't Remy see my pictures?
By default it can't. A picture is only findable by its words if you switch on Describe my pictures in Settings, AI. Then each picture is sent once to OpenAI, which writes one sentence about it. Notes you keep out of AI are never described, and turning the setting off deletes every description.
Are there limits on Ask Remy?
Yes. Each person has a daily number of questions and a small monthly AI allowance, shown in Settings, AI.
Can I ask Remy about Recallit itself?
Yes. Ask how something works, what a limit is, what Insights or Obsidian are, or how they differ, and Remy answers from Recallit's own guide, which is built from these pages and says so ("From Recallit's guide"). Remy only knows what the guide says, so for anything it cannot answer, use Settings, Help & Feedback.
What is Insights, and how is it different from Obsidian?
Insights is inside Recallit: your saved cards drawn as a galaxy, grouped by meaning into named themes, always up to date. Obsidian is a separate free app that opens a folder of notes on your own computer as a connected map; Recallit can export your library to it. Insights finds patterns you did not label and is for exploring. An Obsidian vault is a copy you own, with links made from tags and shelves, that you can edit and extend offline. Ask Remy for the full comparison.
How long are my chats with Remy kept?
For 90 days, so you can look back at them. You can delete one chat, or all of them, in Ask Remy at any time, and they are removed if you delete your account.
Notes, shelves and files
What can a note hold?
Text, checklists, pictures, sketches and file attachments. You can pick a paper style (plain, lined, grid, dotted or legal), pin a note, and give it a colour. Notes save as you type, and if two devices change the same note you are asked which version to keep.
What are Shelves?
Groups you make yourself, like folders, for cards that belong together.
What files can I keep?
Documents, spreadsheets, slides, PDFs, text, pictures, audio and video, up to 25 MB each and 200 MB in total. Programs, scripts, archives and web pages are refused. Files are not virus-scanned, so open anything you did not make yourself with care. Only you can open your files.
Privacy and control
Who can see what I save?
Only you can see your cards, notes, files and pictures in the app. Recallit is a small service run by one person, so the person who runs it can see account details and usage, and has technical access to the database. It is not a sealed vault. The Privacy page says exactly what happens.
What is sent to OpenAI?
When you save a page or file, its text (up to about 12,000 characters) is sent to write the summary and tags. Ask Remy sends your question and the best-matching cards. Meaning search sends each card's title, tags, summary and the start of its text, once. Picture descriptions send a picture, only if you switch them on.
Is what I save used to train AI?
Recallit sends text to OpenAI through its developer service, not the ChatGPT app. OpenAI's published terms for that service say data sent this way is not used to train its models by default, but OpenAI's own policy governs this, not Recallit. If you want something never to leave Recallit, use Keep out of AI.
Can I keep something out of AI completely?
Yes. Turn on Keep out of AI for a note, or for all new notes in Settings, AI. Such a note is never sent to OpenAI, never used by Remy or Related, and never described.
What if I delete something by mistake?
Deleted cards go to the Trash for 30 days and can be restored. After that, or if you choose Delete forever, they are removed.
Can I take my data with me?
Yes. Export everything (Settings, Data) makes a zip with your cards, notes, files and pictures. The Obsidian export makes a vault of Markdown notes. You can also delete your account and everything in it.
How do I delete my account?
Settings, Data, then Delete account. It asks for your password, then removes your account and everything in it. It cannot be undone, so export first if you want a copy.
Are my things backed up?
Yes, continuously and nightly. If you delete something, an older backup copy can remain for up to about six months before it ages out.
Account and security
I forgot my password.
Choose Forgot password? on the sign-in screen. We email a code to your address.
How do I change my email or password?
Settings, Account. A new email address is confirmed with a code sent to that address first. Changing your password signs your other sessions out.
What do Lock and Sign out do?
Lock signs this browser out and asks only for your password next time (your username is remembered). Sign out forgets the name too. Sign out everywhere (Settings, Account) ends every session and every connected extension.
Why was I signed out?
Sessions last 30 days. Changing your password, or using Sign out everywhere, ends them sooner.
